More information about the Speakers Database from Dave Blitz

An on-line database CCSU Speakers is now available at the following url:

http://honors.ccsu.edu/speakers.html

(Note: there is NO "www" prefix to this url; just start with "honors")

This database is open to posting by any faculty or administrator on campus. It can be read by anyone on or off campus. The database is open to postings for speakers, academic conferences, panels, debates, cultural events and exhibits (e.g. fine arts). Already, there are 8 postings from Every Monday, Telling Her Story and others. The database can handle an unlimited number of postings, so please go ahead and advertise your events. As the database becomes better known, it should contain all events of academic or cultural note on campus. Instructions follow:

*To add a notice*: Click on the image or the highlighted link in the first box to go to the server carrying the database. You can post to the database, which is accessible to anyone on or off campus, by clicking on "Add" and using the following username and password: ********** (The password was sent to all faculty in an e-mail. Contact Dave Blitz for the password.) (the same for both username and password). Please don't give the password to unauthorized users, as otherwise the integrity of postings to the database cannot be maintained. You can print out a simple poster for your event by following the instructions.

*To modify a notice*: You can modify an entry you have made by clicking on "Modify". But you must have the serial number (a five digit number) you were given at the time you created the record. Mark the number down when it first appears on your screen after creating a record. [You can experiment with the database by entering a mock record, recording its number, returning to the main page, clicking on "Modify" and then choosing the "Delete" option].

*To search for a record*: Anyone can view records for the day, month, next month or all records by clicking on "Search". Options for searching are explained and the user has a variety of choices for search criteria or dates. No password is required for access to the search function.

The data-base will allow members of the campus community to keep informed of activities, as well as make sure that a proposed event doesn't conflict with another already scheduled event. I and many others have wanted to have something like this for years, and finally, using the interactive on-line technology of FileMaker Pro, I think this database works. If you find any bugs or glitches, or have suggestions for improvement, please contact me by return email at blitz@ccsu.edu. Anyone interested in the FileMaker Pro interactive on-line technology can also contact me for further information.

Please note: the availability of the database will be affected by electrical interruptions to the server. If you find that the server is down (you cannot reach it from the url given above), it will be returned to service only once I am able to restart the server after a power interruption. /d
