(IS), Roy Temple (Media Center),
Ron Todd (Art).
The meeting was called to order by Tom Burkholder at 2:10 p.m.
- Motion to approve the minutes of October 6, 2000. Approved.
- Announcements. Paul Altieri: The series of messages on the
listserv about "Chinese duck" was caused by an incorrect
setting on the listserv when it was moved to another computer. That
setting has been corrected so that replies to the list will only go
the the sender of the message in the future. Also, faculty have been
sending messages to Tina Lucas so that Tina can forward them to the
faculty list. Faculty in the School of Arts and Sciences can send
messages to the list themselves. Tina does not have to do that for
them. Send a message to as-faculty@listserv.ccsu.edu.
More information on using the listserv is on the web at http://www.artsci.ccsu.edu/Links/lyrisHelp.htm
As mentioned at the last meeting, there is an ad hoc
committee of the Faculty Senate that will recommend that the Senate
establish a standing committee on Information Technology. The report
from the ad hoc committee will go to the Senate on December
4, 2000.
- Old Business. At the meeting of October 6 the committee
recommended to Dean Higgins that she appoint a group of faculty to
act as an advisory group to the Banner Team. Dean Higgins contacted
Bob Yanckello about this and he seemed to favor the idea. He wanted
to check with the others on his team before making a commitment. He
has not yet given a definite answer to the dean.
- Listserv. Scott Evon reported that the new listserv is up and
running. It can handle lists of up to 1500 members. If someone wants
to create a list, they should send a message to listserv-admin@ccsu.edu.
Someone will contact you to gather the necessary information. The
individual will be the administrator of the list. There will be more
information about this in an upcoming IS newsletter. There will be
web information about the listserv in the near future.
- Web Protection. Scott Evon discussed the different options for
protecting faculty webs. It can be done by account, but that is
difficult. A course area can be set aside on the web and students,
faculty and staff would have access with their NT accounts.
Protection is also available through public folders in Outlook.
Scott will work on some possibilities and email us information on
options that we can use next semester.
- Software. Amy Magno talked about OS 9 for the Mac. That OS works
better on the campus network. We do not have a license for OS 9, so
departments will have to purchase it individually. The cost is $49
per machine. She also discussed software from companies other
than Microsoft where we don't have a site license. It is not legal
to put unlicensed software on computers. A recent problem is with
Word Perfect. Some faculty members have been installing an older
version of WordPerfect on new computers and the program corrupts the
operating system. Individual copies of WordPerfect cost $49. Contact
Amy or Paul Altieri for purchase information.
- New Business. Bill Sherman reported on the study of the IS
department. Al LeDuc of Athene Consultants passed away shortly after
visiting our campus and his report was not complete. His wife has
asked Al McCord to complete the report. He is coordinating his work
with the other members of the visiting team. As a result the report
will be delayed.
Roy Temple gave a demonstration of a new video server that Mark
McGuire set up on the network. A series of Microsoft Office training
videos are available via streaming video on the campus network.
These videos can be used by all members of the campus community. The
topics are Excel, FrontPage, PowerPoint, Word and Outlook. The
address is http://www.ccsu.edu/video.
Bill Sherman reported that there are now 23 classroom workstations
on campus. There is a line item in the governor's budget for
technology in the classroom. If the bond commission approves the
funds there will be more classrooms equipped with computers in the
fall. In addition, the new classroom building will have 9 classroom
labs with 40 student computers in 8 rooms, and 37 student computers
in another room. The other classrooms in the building will have an
instructor's workstation and a projection display system.
Amy Magno announced that we have a PSA agreement with Mac support
and IS has hired a UA who is close to getting Mac
certification. If you called computer repair for your Mac in the
past and you were not satisfied with the results, try again. They
should be able to help you this time.
- The meeting was adjourned at 3:10 p.m.
