The meeting was called to order by Tom Burkholder at 2:00 p.m.

  1. Motion to approve the minutes of February 2, 2001 (Penniman/Harmon). Approved.

  2. Announcements. Students will register for courses in April using the Banner Web Client. There will be a training session for all faculty to try out the same system that the students will be using to register for their courses. That session will be on Friday March 30 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

  3. Computer inventory update. Computer inventories should be returned to Paul Altieri. Please be certain that the CCSU tag numbers for all of your computers are correct.

Tom Burkholder introduced Bob Yanckello as the acting CIO. Bob and Amy Magno provided some information about the faculty computer upgrade policy. New Macs are equipped with CD-RW's. Those with existing Macs can purchase an external drive with OE money. The latest PCs are 933 machines, with 256 MB Ram and 20 MB HDD. The question of keeping old computers for part-time faculty, student workers and grad assistants was raised. Bob was open to the possibility, but he would want to put some limits on how many old computers a department could retain. Amy reminded everyone that she would like to take all unused computers and computer equipment off their hands. Please call facilities management to get someone to pick up your equipment.

Bob announced that representative from Athene Consultants will be back on campus March 21 or 22. This is during the spring break. Unfortunately, it is the only time that all of the major participants are available to meet.

  4. Roy talked about the new classroom systems. They will be basically the same as the existing units, but there will be a desktop machine, rather than a laptop in the rack. The monitor will be on the top of the rack and the Elmo will be moved to a table next to the unit. There will be 12 new classroom installations. The locations are as follows:
    HB 262
    HK 112
EW 214 Projector Only (Journalism Lab)
    EW 308
    EW 203
    FD 109
    FD 314
    FD xxx History
    HW 21 (or 109)
    NC 523 or 519 Lemare
    NC 236, 232, 210 or 209
    HB 336 Language Lab

The Media Center will be offering a series of workshops for faculty and administrators. You can view a description of the workshops and sign up at:

  1. Clayton Penniman discussed a proposal to bring WebCT to campus to support our classroom endeavors (not for online courses). He wants to purchase the software, hardware and hire an "academic technology fellow" to help train faculty. Bob Yanckello was receptive to the idea and seemed willing to provide the server. Some questions were raised about changes that might be made at CSU. Bob felt that we should go ahead with this initiative, regardless of what CSU decides to do. He would like to see summer training of faculty on using this new system.

Scott Evon described the new Citrix server that  IS is getting ready to install. This is a server that can be accessed from any computer, Mac or PC, with a web browser. The program will run on the server, but you will be able to control the program from your computer.  The prime purpose is so that people with Macs will be able to run the full Banner client. This would also allow us to use some programs at home. He wants to know what applications we would like to have, especially PC applications that cannot be run on a Mac.

The system office purchased Radius, a software program that replaces the dialin that we now have at 356-3500. To access our campus network with this new software, you will need to add two backslashes to your domain name\username.

    \\ccsu_comp_srv\username rather than ccsu_comp_srv\username

  2. Paul Altieri asked the committee to consider the proposal for a campus technology committee that will be presented to the Senate on Monday. There has been some criticism of the proposal due to the large size of the proposed committee. The members of the Arts & Sciences committee felt that the size was commensurate with the expected importance of the committee. They felt that it would rank in importance with Curriculum, Graduate Studies and Academic Standards. Those committees are as large or larger than the proposed group.

  3. Carol Jones raised the issue of support after 4:30 p.m. We have an extensive evening program. Evening support should be available when systems fail.

  4. The meeting was adjourned at 3:20 p.m.
