Minutes
September 10, 1999
Media Center, Willard Hall Room 004
Present: Paul Altieri (Economics), Tim Bakken (Criminology and
CJ),
Catherine Baratta (Sociology/Social Work), David Blitz (Honors
Program), Tom Burkholder (Chemistry), Jim Conway (Psychology), Antonio
Garcia-Lozada
(Modern Languages), Robert
Glarner (Music), Paul Karpuk (Modern Languages), Dan Larose (Mathematical Sciences), Peter
Lemaire (Physics/Earth
Sciences), Rae Schipke (English), Marc Triebwasser (Political
Science).
Guests: Scott Erardi (Media Center), June Higgins (Arts & Sciences), Bill Sherman (Info.
Support Serv.), Roy Temple (Media Center).
The meeting was called to order at 2:05 p.m.
- Marc Triebwasser suggested that the job of secretary be rotated
among the members of the committee rather than having Paul Altieri
take the notes. The consensus of the committee was to have Paul
continue to serve as secretary.
- The minutes of April 9, 1999 were approved (Burkholder/Glarner).
- Dean Higgins greeted the members of the committee. She expressed her
gratitude for the work of the committee in the past and stressed the
important role the committee plays in helping to advance the use of
technology in our academic programs.
- Election of Chair
A motion was made to have a single chair, rather than co-chairs
(Blitz/Burkholder). Carried. Dave Blitz took the chair to conduct the
election. Tom Burkholder was nominated (Altieri/Larose). There were no
other nominations. The secretary cast one ballot for Tom. Tom
Burkholder assumed the chair.
- Announcements:
Bill Sherman addressed the committee. All leased computers will be
replaced. The replacements will start in April. Some departments want
to purchase the leased machines. In most cases the prices set by the
leasing company are higher than the computers are worth. Purchases may
not make sense.
Digital video can now be piped into the classrooms. The goal for this
year is to move it into faculty offices. A new Internet provider will
come on line around October and there will be an improved pipeline to
CSU.
Roy Temple noted that the following rooms are equipped with new
computer equipment with display capabilities: C231, C223, C224, MS221,
MS222, MS223, EW208, EW005, HB349, Maloney127. Roy demonstrated the
capabilities of the system on the equipment in EW005.
Bill stated that the Arts and Sciences long-range plan convinced him
that there is a large demand for new classroom display equipment. He
plans to add about 30 more classrooms as soon as possible.
Roy Temple distributed an announcement for faculty workshops that he
will be coordinating this fall. The topics are PowerPoint on
October 1, Basic Web Page Creation on October 29, Graphic File
Formats on November 19, and Discussion Groups on December 3
(tentative).
Bill Sherman reported about a meeting he had with Congressman and
alumnus John Larsen. There is a national proposal for colleges to
cooperate with K-12 schools. If some faculty have ideas about how we
can work with elementary and secondary schools, they should contact
Bill.
Joan Calvert was not present to report on the Academic Computing
Council. Marc Triebwasser noted that the Council has $20,000 to
distribute for items other than software. Joan will send out a request
for proposals to the faculty.
- Marc Triebwasser raised the issue of funding for courseware. He
feels that there should be a line item in the Vice President's budget
to cover this expense. After some discussion it was decided that Marc
would draft a resolution to that effect and present it to the
committee.
- The question of the School web policy was discussed and the sense of
the committee was that we should try to get the information out to the
faculty. In order to emphasize the considerable work already being
done by Arts and Sciences faculty on the web, the committee decided
that there should be a page of links to faculty webs. The School
webmaster will create a page in the Arts and Sciences area and ask the
CCSU webmaster to provide a link from the area of the University
homepage.
- There was a motion to adjourn (Conway/Lemaire). Carried. The meeting was adjourned at 3:50 p.m.
