Guidelines for the Dean's Research Initiative Funding

The Dean’s Research Initiative grants are designed to help support research conducted by Arts & Science faculty.  Some possible uses include:

• To supplement travel funds to present research at national or international conferences after departmental and School funds have been exhausted,
• To support travel to collect data (please note that AAUP travel funds cannot be used for this purpose),
• To provide funds to hire students to assist in a research project,
• To provide funds to support payment to research subjects.

The typical funding amount will not exceed $2,000 per faculty member per year. This money can be used to supplement other sources of funding such as faculty research grants, travel, etc. These will be competitive grants and the proposals will be reviewed by Dean Pease, a panel of department chairs, and Arts & Sciences staff.  No stipends or equipment purchases will be allowed with these funds.

There will be no partial funding for these proposals. We strongly suggest that you do not try to pad expenses. If you need $1,000, do not ask for $1,600, expecting it to be reduced to $1,000. Funding will be all or nothing. There will be four funding deadlines: October 1, December 1, February 1, and April 1. Applications received after one of these deadlines will be considered with the next batch of applications.  All funds received from the Dean’s Research Initiative must be spent by September 1^st.

At the end of the project you will be expected to submit a report on how the funding was used.  It should also include evidence of the final product of your work, such as a manuscript, external grant proposal, presentation at a conference, etc. Final reports should include a brief description of the project outcomes and benefits to CCSU.  If you have received Dean’s Initiative funding in the past then you will need to complete that project and submit a final report before we can award any new funds.
